Why indoor air gets so dry in Las Vegas
Outdoor humidity here is very low for most of the year, and the air inside your home follows it. Running the heat on cold nights dries indoor air further, because warming air lowers its relative humidity. Most guidance puts comfortable indoor humidity somewhere between 30 and 50 percent. Many valley homes sit well under that for months at a time.
You do not need an instrument to notice it, although an inexpensive hygrometer will confirm it. Common signs:
- Static shocks from door handles and light switches
- Dry skin, chapped lips and a dry nose or throat in the morning
- Gaps opening in wood floors, or cracks in furniture and trim
- Guitars and pianos that will not stay in tune
A portable humidifier treats one room and needs refilling every day. A whole-home unit is plumbed into the water supply, mounted on the ductwork and controlled by a humidistat, so it adds moisture to every room the system serves.

Bypass, fan-powered and steam humidifiers
- Bypass. Mounts on the ductwork with a short duct linking supply and return. The pressure difference pushes warm air through a wet pad, and the moisture it picks up is carried into the house. It has no fan of its own and few parts to fail, but it only adds much moisture while the heat is running.
- Fan-powered. Uses its own fan to push air across the pad, so it puts out more moisture than a bypass unit of similar size and needs no bypass duct. It works best with warm air too.
- Steam. Boils water electrically and injects steam into the airstream. It has the highest and most precise output and can work with only the blower running, without a call for heat. It needs its own electrical circuit, uses more electricity and collects scale fastest.
The choice comes down to the size of the home, how often your heat runs, whether you have a furnace or a heat pump, and what power and drain connections are available near the unit. Heat pumps deliver cooler supply air than furnaces, which limits what pad-type units can evaporate, so steam is often the better match for them.
How a whole-home humidifier is installed
- We check the furnace or air handler and the ducts for a mounting spot with enough room and airflow.
- We cut in the unit and, for bypass models, the connecting duct with a damper you can close in summer.
- We connect a water line with its own shutoff valve and run a drain line.
- We wire the unit so it can only run when the blower is moving air, and mount the humidistat.
- We set a starting humidity level and show you how to adjust it.
More is not better. Too much humidity leaves condensation on windows on cold nights and can put moisture inside ducts and wall cavities, which invites mold. Start around 30 to 35 percent and raise it slowly. Most units are shut off for the cooling season, since the air conditioner removes some moisture as it runs, and none should be adding moisture during monsoon humidity. If your air handler is in the attic, we take extra care with the water and drain connections, because a leak there ends up in the ceiling.
Hard water and humidifier maintenance
Las Vegas tap water is very hard: about 280 parts per million, or 16 grains per gallon, according to the Las Vegas Valley Water District. When a humidifier evaporates that water, the minerals stay behind. Pads crust over and stop wicking, the small orifice that meters water clogs, drain lines narrow, and steam canisters fill with scale. A humidifier that has quit is more often scaled up than broken.
- Replace the pad at least once a season, and check it midway through.
- Clean the water distribution tray, orifice and drain line when the pad is changed.
- Replace or clean the steam canister when the unit calls for it.
- Look for drips or white mineral tracks around the unit and its water valve.
- Shut off the water and close the bypass damper when you stop using it for the season.
We can do all of this during a maintenance visit. A water treatment system can reduce scale, though some steam units have specific water requirements, so we check the manufacturer's instructions first.
Talking to us about a humidifier
Call 702-497-0888 and tell us what you are noticing and what kind of heating system you have. A licensed technician will come out, measure the humidity in the house, look at the equipment and ductwork, and say plainly which type fits and what upkeep it will need with our water. If you already have a humidifier that has stopped working, we service all makes and models and will tell you whether it needs a cleaning, a part or a replacement.

What humidity level should I set in my home?
For most Las Vegas homes, 30 to 40 percent is a comfortable and realistic target. Start at the low end and raise it a little at a time. If you see condensation forming on the inside of windows on cold nights, the setting is too high for the conditions and should come down. Higher is not better for the house.
Which type of humidifier is right for a Las Vegas home?
It depends mostly on your heating system and how much moisture the house needs. Bypass and fan-powered units are simple and suit homes with a gas furnace that runs regularly in winter. Steam units cost more to buy and run, but they deliver more moisture and do not rely on furnace heat, which makes them a common choice for larger homes and heat pump systems.
How often does the humidifier pad need replacing?
Plan on at least once per heating season, and expect to check it partway through. With water as hard as ours, a pad can crust with minerals well before the season ends, and once it stops absorbing water the humidifier puts out very little. If the pad feels stiff and looks white or tan with scale, replace it.
Can a whole-home humidifier cause mold?
It can if it is set too high, leaks or is left dirty. Mold needs moisture, so the risks are a humidistat turned up until surfaces get damp, a drain line that clogs and overflows, or a pad left wet and scaled for years. A unit that is sized correctly, kept at a moderate setting and cleaned each season is unlikely to create those conditions.
Does a whole-home humidifier waste water?
Pad-type humidifiers use more water than they evaporate. Most are flow-through designs that let extra water run across the pad and down the drain to carry minerals away, though only while the unit is operating. Steam units use roughly what they turn into steam, plus periodic drain cycles to flush scale. We set the water flow correctly at installation, since conservation matters here.
